Going green has never seemed more important. More businesses are trying to find new ways to reduce their carbon footprint. We all want to help the environment, but many companies don’t know how to go green in their day to day lives. But what about in our homes? Going green in your garden and home is a great place to start. Having a garden office that is built using reclaimed wood is both a stylish and practical addition. It provides a comfortable retreat and a place to focus and get away from distractions. It reduces your carbon footprint, and it means that you can add an extra room to your home without any long term building works or costly construction purchases.

This month, we look into why opting for a sustainable garden building should be at the top of your list and how Handmade Hideaways can make this happen for your garden.

Reclaimed garden buildings – why are they better?

Garden buildings are an excellent way to add space to your home without it costing you a fortune. But what happens when you want to go green and not buy a new building? There are several benefits to using reclaimed materials to build your garden building:

You’ll be helping the environment – Reclaimed wood is a renewable source and, when used correctly, can reduce landfill sites and work towards reducing deforestation.

It will last longer – Older wood is less likely to split due to already being exposed to the elements – it’s expanded and contracted as much as it is ever going to do. This makes the wood more robust and much longer-lasting than its newer counterparts.

It will look better – reclaimed wood brings a sense of style and class that you don’t get from newer timber. By choosing wood that has stood the test of time, you will be bringing a beautiful creation into your garden.

Much of our reclaimed timber comes from places that have specifically attended a site to save the used wood. This could be from a barn, an old factory or a warehouse. This timber is protected and brought back to store correctly and safely until purchased by those looking to use it in a sustainable project. This is where Handmade Hideaways comes in. We source much of our timber from reclaimed yards to provide the most environmentally friendly projects and to give this reclaimed timber a new lease of life.

Choosing the suitable garden building for your home

Choosing and using the right garden building in your home is vital. Of course, we all want a beautiful and unique garden building that we can use for various purposes. Whether it’s for sitting outside and enjoying the summer or entertaining guests, having a garden building that you love is important. More and more people want to make their garden building match their home and garden, making it harder to choose the right one.

We don’t work off of templated papers or old blueprints when you choose to work with Handmade Hideaways. We believe that we will only achieve the perfect garden building for you if we start from scratch and spend time discussing your wants/needs/dreams and analysing the space you have before we start.

Working with us has never been easier. Just give us a call and book an appointment – we will come to you and work with you to ensure you know exactly what you are looking for and what would be perfect for your garden. Once we have all the information we need, we will create the plans for your new garden building and check in with you along the way to make sure you are happy with the progress.

Make your garden building last even longer.

If you are considering a garden building, you need to know how to protect and treat it so the retreat will last as long as poss you. Luckily, when you use reclaimed timber, as the wood has already spent much of its time exposed to the elements, it is stronger and more durable than other new wood. The Handmade Hideaways team will always be on hand to give you any advice and guidance you may need to look after your new garden building after we have finished constructing it.

  • Try to keep the humidity within your garden building as low as possible. If you have windows built into your garden retreat, make sure you open these regularly to let air flow through the building. This also helps to keep the air in your retreat as fresh as possible.
  • Don’t stack or store building materials, logs or furniture right up against your building. Doing this won’t allow proper airflow through the wood and could lead to damage.
  • Try to keep the snow from building up against your garden building. Snow build up could lead to moisture entering the building or damaging the bottom half of your structure.
